“We appear to have two more live service games from Sony this fiscal year,” said Sony president Jim Ryan. First reported by VGC, Jim Ryan revealed the information in a business briefing and said that while MLB The Show was a live service they released, there was more to come.
There are few clues as to what these live-service games might be, with less than a year until Sony’s March 2023 fiscal year ends. This is in line with Sony’s intention to release a total of ten live service games by 2026.
The first thought that might come to mind is Destiny 2, since Sony acquired Bungie earlier this year. However, Jim Ryan eliminated that possibility by saying that sci-fi FPS doesn’t count as either of the pair. Also, none of these games have been announced yet, which rules out some other good guesses, like Supertrick’s Deathverse.
So, what other information can be leaked? Well, earlier this year, Sony also acquired Haven Studios, led by industry veteran Jade Raymond, who we know is working on his own unannounced multiplayer game.
Many, including VGC in the report listed above, believe this could be a multiplayer game by Naughty Dog based on The Last of Us IP. While we know it exists in some capacity, it’s shrouded in mystery, just like Haven Software’s projects.
Either way, if you’re a multiplayer fiend and have an insatiable thirst for a battle pass, this is something to look forward to. As for when we might hear about these games, time is certainly running out as September approaches. Not-E3 is coming, though, and it could be the perfect opportunity to showcase PlayStation’s latest projects — live services and more.
