Guard had the opportunity to talk with the legendary Shigeru Miyamoto, and the conversation eventually came down to the question of whether he plans to retire at all. Mr. Miyamoto said he has absolutely no plans to retire, but said he is “thinking about things five years out” and therefore sometimes thinks about who he can pass things on to in case something happens.
I think I already know how Miyamoto will answer when I ask him if he’s ever been tempted to retire. Of course, he doesn’t plan to do that; he still loves what he does. “More than retirement, I’m thinking about the day I collapse,” he says with a smile. “In this day and age, you have to think about things on a five-year time frame, so I’m thinking about who I can pass things on to, in case something happens.
“I’m really grateful that there’s so much energy around the things I’ve been working on. These are things that have already gone out into the world… they were cultivated by others, other people raised them, helped them grow, so in that sense I no longer feel too much ownership of them.”
