In the past 12 months, Bayonetta fans have played Bayonetta 3 and Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon. It was a busy time, and in an interview with Famitsu translated by Nintendo Everything, various game development people revealed how things are going.
You see, Nintendo producer Makoto Okazaki suggested that both games were being developed at the same time. However, there was a long period of time where the Bayonetta Origins team had to work on the game quietly behind the scenes. Because of this, both Okazaki and PlatinumGames supervising director Hideki Kamiya felt that this resulted in frustration and difficult things for the team. That’s because, according to Kamiya, “when it’s announced, we hear the fans’ expectations and hopes, and that can really help motivate the staff.”
At one point, Kamiya revealed, “I don’t want to sound like I’m complaining, but even during mid-development we didn’t really know if Bayonetta 3 or Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon would be released first.” Okazaki explained why, saying that “for Nintendo, the question of which to release first was based on which would generate the most excitement for the Bayonetta series, while also looking at the development status of both games. In the end, we decided to deliver Bayonetta 3 to existing fans before announcing and releasing a brand new title”.
Finally, they confirmed that since both games were developed simultaneously, it was done by 2 different development teams within PlatinumGames. Nintendo producer Koji Tanaka said that “we still share information within the company and we were all aware of what kind of game it was and the story that both would have,” and Kamiya said that “since they were made at the same time, there are secret connections between the worlds. If you play both, I feel you can enjoy a deeper experience. Or of course you can just play Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon”.
