The tabletop renaissance has created audiences more diverse than ever, even for niche genres like historical board games and war games. Now a new mentoring program, led by a blue ribbon panel from Industry experts, hopes to diversify the roster of tabletop gaming designers as well.
Called the Zenobia PrizeOrganizers say the competition is open to anyone from an under-represented (non-white, non-male) group, “including women, colored people and LGBTQ + people”. Three winners will receive a cash prize and mentoring for their design from a long list of industry experts.
The selection panel includes well-known academics, journalists, and tabletop influencers, as well as some of the best designers in the field today. Fans of the genre will recognize panel members Jason Matthews, co-designer of the legendary Twilight Fight; Volko Ruhnke, creator of the COIN series of counterinsurgency wargames; and Cole Wehrle, creator of Oath: Chronicles of Empire and Exile
