Last week Battlefield 2042 Developers DICE first offered a limited-edition skin depicting a smiling attack helicopter for the game’s Russian faction, then decided that now wasn’t the best time to give players such rewards.
For some time, the ailing online shooter offers special rewards for players who can complete certain weekly challenges, sometimes in the form of specialist outfits, sometimes weapon and vehicle skins. Dubbed the “Grin Reaper” last week, the skin in question featured an aggressive smile based on the iconic “shark tooth” custom of aircraft art that goes back to the First World War. It then went live as events in Ukraine rapidly deteriorated and was quickly withdrawn:
It was the right move on the part of developers DICE for anyone looking at this skin in isolation, but it also sets an odd precedent where that particular item was considered distasteful, but the rest of the game itself was – which features aggressive Russia in the near future as one of only two factions that players have a 50/50 chance of being automatically assigned to before each game – is fine.
The removed skin was not replaced; Anyone booting up the game sees a blank area of the screen, which is typically where a player’s progress toward the current weekly reward is located. DICE says that “weekly missions will return later this week,” and hasn’t ruled out offering this skin again at a later time.
This is kind of the third time Battlefield 2042 Skins have been making headlines since the game launched. First There was a skin directly related to Russia’s annexation of parts of Ukraine in 2014, specifically the “little green men”.unmarked Russian special forces that “allowed Vladimir Putin to briefly claim that they were indeed local insurgents and therefore it was not a clear and overt annexation of foreign territory.”
Then some for Christmas Players were upset that a holiday skin would feature Santa with an assault rifle, then other players were upset that DICE ripped the skin after a setback. It was all very sad.
