Reviews are in for the new one Cowboy bebop and they are everywhere (even in the house igamesnews). But everyone – from the creative team behind the Netflix series to those who previewed the episodes – seem to agree that there would be no version of the show without composer Yoko Kanno. From the explosive opening jazz track “Tank!” To the crazy caper melody “RUSH” and Raj Ramayya’s gentle singing in “Ask DNA”, Kanno’s contributions played a central role in Cowboy bebop
Netflix is rightly celebrating the return of Yoko Kanno. In a new featurette, the composer sits down to talk about the origins of the music and conducts the Seatbelts crew as they play some rousing, trumpet-popping cues. It is, as you might expect if you are familiar with their job, great.
“What made it very easy this time around was that the same musicians called Seatbelts from 20 years ago were ready to help me, I feel like I’ve known them all my life,” says Kanno in the mini-documentary. “You could take a single melody line and work it out into something really cool.”
Still, she was ready to bring new sounds to the live-action series, which, despite being indebted to the anime, tries to be something new. According to Kanno, only a tenth of the music is carried over from their original soundtrack.
“Yoko was right at the point of, ‘I’m going to do this again. I love that, but what you’ve created justifies a bit of reinvention, ”says showrunner André Nemec in the video.
At the top of the featurette, star John Cho says that recruiting Yoko Kanno was the real deal sealer for him to get involved with the project. He had to be part of it, part of this music. Who could resist? Assignable.
