This morning, Bandai Namco and From Software announced that all servers for Dark Souls Remastered, 2, and 3 were due to a “Problem with online services.Although the publisher didn’t provide any further details, it is believed that the “issue” is a recently released PC exploit that would allow a malicious hacker to break into your game and then remotely execute code on your PC and thus effectively take control of it.
Yesterday a post on the Elden ring underreddit announced that a Remote Code Execution (RCE) exploit had been discovered. These types of exploits are very nasty as they allow a hacker to take control of your computer, brick it, steal sensitive data and files, or activate malicious software.
The exploit is only on the PC and does not work on the Dark Souls Games released on consoles.
the Dark Souls The RCE exploit was seen in action two days ago during one Dark Souls 3 Live broadcast. Twitch user The__Grim__Sleeper was playing the game and after being attacked, his game crashes and a text-to-speech narrator starts speaking. To be clear, The Grim Sleeper had no control over this and was shocked when it happened.
Within the Dark Souls Community, it is believed that the person responsible for hacking this stream was not a malicious hacker but someone who has known about this exploit for some time. They reportedly tried to contact From Software about the RCE exploit
According to a post on the Dark Souls 3 underreddit, Blue Warden, a fan-made anti-cheat for the game, has already been updated to stop this exploit. It also explains that initial reports that the exploit was leaked may be false, with speculation that only about four people directly involved with Blue Sentinel know how to perform the nasty hack.
igamesnews contacted the publisher about the exploit and the shutdown of the PC servers.
Part of the fear surrounding this exploit is that it’s theorized that it might work Elden ring, due to the similarity of the technology used in this game to previous From Software titles. The hope is to reveal the exploit now before the game’s release previously fixed Elden ring appears next month.
Bandai Namco seems to have noticed the problem. It replied to a Reddit post about the Dark Souls RCE, said: “Thanks for the ping, a report on this issue was sent to the relevant internal teams earlier today, the information is greatly appreciated!”
And now the servers for everyone Dark Souls Games on PC are not available at the moment, there is no information yet on when they will return. Although Bandai Namco has not confirmed that this downtime is due to this exploit, it seems highly likely.
