Plans to adapt Octavia E. Butler’s groundbreaking novel relationship for the screen have toured Hollywood since the book’s publication in 1979. But with the help of writer Branden Jacobs-Jenkins (Guardian) the sci-fi story has finally found a home on FX and Hulu. FX premiered the first full trailer this Tuesday, following an earlier teaser published last weekwhich revealed that the entire first season would arrive on Hulu this December.

The release of the entire season of relationship bears a striking resemblance to Amazon Studios’ approach The subway, Barry Jenkins’ 2021 television adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s 2016 novel of the same name, which had its full release on May 14 last year. While the latter series won the Golden Globe Award for Best Miniseries or TV Movie and received B. a Peabody Award, one can’t help but wonder if the series would have had a larger word-of-mouth audience , if it had been released episodically. And what could be better for word of mouth than an awesome looking sci-fi series based on an all-time classic book.
During her turbulent career, Octavia E. Butler was a Hugo Prize winner and MacArthur Fellow, but relationship remains her most popular and influential novel. We’ll see if the series adaptation can make the same kind of connection with audiences when it releases in full on December 13th.
