While the main Steam app itself has gotten better over the years, it’s still pretty easy to look at Valve’s approach to store and platform design, look at competitors like Google and Apple, and see how it all feels a bit quaint. Steam’s mobile app has been one of the main culprits in this regard, so it’s great to see that it’s getting a massive update today.
valve has “completely revised” the app for both iOS and Android and introduces the following:
– Two-factor authentication to ensure only you have access to your account
– QR Code Login – Scan a QR code to log into Steam instead of entering a password or…
– Login Confirmation – Confirm your regular Steam logins with a simple “Approve” or “Reject”.
– Authorized Devices – Manage access to the devices your account is signed in to
– Easy access to store, community, news, etc. from anywhere
– Your library with access to your game content, discussions, guides, support and more
– Remotely download games and updates to your PC, managed from your phone
– Customizable Steam notifications: wishlist, sales, comments, trades, discussions, friend requests and more
– Trade and Market Confirmations – to ensure items do not leave your account without your consent
– An improved shop browsing experience for mobile screens
– Support for using multiple Steam accounts in the app
– Customizable tabs
From the QR codes to the remote download, these are all great additions that we’ve come to expect from stores in the modern age. You can see the new app in action in the video below far
Design geeks will note that the app now shares many of the same design cues as the desktop shopfront, suggesting that Valve may indeed have settled on a consistent design identity for its platformwhich would be…a first for the company.
