stranger things 4 Part 1 is over, but the problems are just beginning. The new season of the Netflix hit ended on a high note, alternating between Eleven battling a powerful nemesis (more on that below) and Nancy facing worse circumstances than ever. So what do we hope stranger things 4 Part 2 Answers for us? We have some initial questions here.
[Ed. note: This post goes into detail about the entirety of Stranger Things 4 part 1. Spoilers abound.]
What is Vecna’s goal?
The great evil of stranger things 4 is more than just a Freddy Krueger and D&D inspired monster. It turns out he’s also Brenner’s first test subject, One – aka the charmingly creepy orderly who helps El in her flashbacks and Victor Creel’s son Henry. Growing up, One discovered his powers around the same time he discovered how little he cared about the lives of others. One began by torturing animals and terrorizing his family with visions before finally killing his sister and mother in 1959 (leaving his father to take up the rap).
He was then forcibly taken to Hawkins Lab, where Dr. Brenner implanted a chip in his throat that prevented One from using his powers after seeing his ability for cruelty. Twenty years later, Eleven removed One’s Inhibitor, thinking it was a tracking device and that the two would escape Hawkins Lab together. As One regained his powers, all hell broke loose as he began committing the massacre we saw earlier in the season. When El turned on him, the two kicked off and she pushed him into the Upside Down – probably unintentionally as she didn’t have that much control over her powers at the time and didn’t even know what the Upside Down was. Upon entering the Upside Down, One transformed into the creature the Hawkins children called Vecna.
There’s no doubt that One’s showdown with Eleven left him hungry for revenge and freedom, but beyond that does he have an endgame? In the years since One transformed into Vecna, he seems to have honed his powers even further, trapping his victims in his mind and possibly draining them of energy – perhaps to gather enough power to pull out of the Upside break out down.
Whatever Vecna’s final goal is, it’s possible Season 4 Part 2 won’t end in defeat before he can achieve it. After all, his relationship with Eleven this season was clearly inspired by Vader and Luke Reich strikes back
What happens to Nancy now?
Although Robin and Eddie made it through the gate with no problem, Nancy fell under Vecna’s spell just as she was trying to get into the normal world. In Vecna’s realm, he investigated Nancy’s guilt in Barb’s death. But Nancy didn’t just see horrific images from her past – she also saw glimpses of Vecna’s past, which led her to learn he was Henry Creel.
Just because Vecna shared his story with Nancy doesn’t mean he will make any other special exceptions for her. When Season 4 Part 1 ended, she is threatened with being subsumed by Vecna. So will Dustin, Lucas, Max, Eddie and Robin venture back into the Upside Down to save them, or will it be up to Steve, still in the Looking Glass, to pull them back into our world? And more importantly, what’s Nancy’s favorite song?
Why did the Upside Down freeze on November 6, 1983?
That date definitely has resonance in this world – it’s the day Will disappeared into the Upside Down and started the events of season one. It is also the same day that Eleven first made physical contact with the Demogorgon, thereby creating a gateway to the Upside Down Hawkins Lab and unleashing the monster in our world.
But why either of these events stopped time in the Upside Down is less clear. Perhaps when Eleven touched the Demogorgon, she was unknowingly using her powers to manipulate time? And if Eleven can manipulate time, what does that mean for her – and the world – in the future?
Who reaches Eleven first: Lt. Col Sullivan or Mike?
After extensively torturing Wallace, Sullivan eventually tricked him into revealing Eleven’s whereabouts. Wallace only did so on the condition that Sullivan wouldn’t kill her, but we’re not sure how much we can take Sullivan’s word for it – especially since he’s convinced that Eleven is the one responsible for all the children to kill at Hawkins.
Sullivan is probably on his way to Nevada now, but he’s not the only one looking for El. When we last saw Mike, Will, Jonathan and Argyle they had just discovered the location of The Nina Project thanks to Suzie’s hacking skills. (The coordinates of which are 37.2331 N and 115.7901 W, also known as Area 51.) The text on the screen said the lab was located in Ruth, Nevada, which is about three and a half hours from Salt Lake City, where Suzie lives. Although Google Maps did not exist in 1986, mileage may vary.
Hopefully Mike and the others will get to El first because she’s urgently needed at Hawkins right now. And maybe the long drive from Nevada to Indiana will give Mike and El a chance to talk about the unresolved issues in their relationship before they have to plunge back into monster battles.
Has Eleven gotten her full power back?
Eleven lost her powers after an Upside Down monster (literally) got under her skin at the end of Season 3. Most suspected that the loss of her abilities was a permanent side effect of her encounter with the beast.
However, once she was in the underground lab, Brenner explained that Eleven’s powers are all still there. Her brain signals had just gotten so messed up that she forgot how to use them, much like what can happen to someone after a stroke.
The Nina Project is designed to restore Eleven’s powers by allowing her to relive her past. After reliving some of her memories with One, we saw Eleven being able to temporarily use her powers. Now that she remembers everything that happened to One, does that mean she’s back to full strength – or even stronger than before?
How do Hopper, Joyce and Murray get out of Russia?
Yes, Joyce and Murray defeated a group of guards and Hopper and Dmitri survived the Demogorgon, but they’re still in a well-manned Soviet prison camp. Will the four have to defeat all the guards and government officials to find their way out? Or maybe Joyce’s random button-pushing unwittingly created a mess they could use as cover to escape?
Even if they make it out of the prison camp unscathed, there’s still a ton of Iron Curtain to get to the other side – which will be difficult since Yuri’s plane broke down. With Yuri as a prisoner and Dmitri as an apparent ally, the duo’s local knowledge may be enough to get the group back to the States relatively safe and sound… all so they can take on an otherworldly monster alongside their children.
Are Steve and Nancy dating again?
Just when you thought stranger things Now that we’re done with the love triangle, let’s study amorous trigonometry again. Steve spent the entire season searching in vain for the perfect girl. Nancy spent the season downplaying her concerns about her long-distance relationship with Jonathan, who (without her knowing) has decided not to move across the country to go to college with her. Though it’s been a while since they’ve dated, Steve and Nancy still have such obvious chemistry that they both received unsolicited words of encouragement strongly superior the connection they have. It will be interesting to see what happens when Jonathan reappears in Hawkins. Speaking of…
When does everyone get together?
This season has spread stranger things was cast more widely than ever, and the midseason finale had the characters split between Russia, Salt Lake City, Nevada, regular Hawkins, and Upside Down Hawkins. That’s a lot of ground to cover!
So when will all of our players be back in the same place? It’s likely that by the end of part 2 we’ll at least see all the kids in Hawkins get together, but Joyce doesn’t even realize her kids aren’t in California anymore! And it’s not like Jonathan has a cell phone that she can call and ask where he is if she makes it from Russia.
Is Will gay?
Even though stranger things Will often seems to forget that when his life isn’t in danger (or his life is in danger of getting the worst haircut), the show seemed to be working toward something with Will this season — something he doesn’t seem to want to share with the rest of the group.
There were hints in Part 1 that Will was holding back, such as when he reminded El that friends don’t lie and melancholically comforting Mike while worrying about his relationship with Eleven. “Sometimes it’s just scary to open up and say how you feel,” he told Mike in a charged moment on episode 5. “What if the people you care about the most don’t like the truth ?” Many have interpreted those moments as a sign that Will is about to come out as gay.
Add to that the fact that Will painted a lot but refused to show anyone what he was working on. The work is clearly very personal and important to Will, as he took it to the airport to pick Mike up and even made sure to take the painting with him when the kids fled the agents and left the Byers’ California home.
All of this isn’t a huge flow of the season, but it does suggest something is happening to Will that goes beyond trying to find Eleven and dealing with creatures from the Upside Down. It’s certainly possible that whatever Will chooses to reveal has nothing to do with his sexuality, but we hope his friends will accept Will’s truth, whatever it may be.
What about the satanic panic in Hawkins?
Alongside the otherworldly horrors of Vecna and the militaristic terror of the Soviet prison camp, there’s also the more humane, but still dangerous, issue of satanic panic sweeping through Hawkins. After watching one of his teammates be killed by Vecna, basketball star Jason became convinced that Eddie was the leader of a satanic cult perpetrating the murders, and not just the DM of a Dungeons & Dragons club.
When Jason shared his theory at a town meeting, he whipped the townsfolk into a frenzy and launched a hunt for the Hellfire Club. Members Lucas, Max, and Dustin were arrested by police in the woods, but the trio managed to elude them after being taken home for questioning. That means Lucas, Max, and Dustin are technically on the run from the cops, which will no doubt meddle in Upside Down affairs.
Will we ever get the Kate Bush anthem “Running Up That Hill” out of our heads?
You just keep playing it and we get it and it clap. But we wonder how many more Kate Bush pindrops there will be in the two episodes (and nearly four hours) of the season.
