Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is really very good. You’ve probably heard this before. Our own assessment other reviews of the game pretty much praised it. But this is not a rating. Instead, we’re just reiterating that it really is as good as so many other people have claimed. In fact, some of us at my city put it on our Game of the Year list already.
The Week of the Games: Return to Hyrule
And don’t worry, no spoilers below.
For those who just tune in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is the sequel to 2019 Jedi: Fallen Order. And just like before, in this latest adventure from Respawn and EA, players will take on the role of Cal Kestis, a Jedi who survived the Purge as a young boy and now hangs out with his ragtag family of misfits as they try to free them from the Galaxy from the Empire. Oh, and also try not to get caught by all the people chasing them. (And there are many people
eat survivors is one of those games that just feels amazing. Cal’s controls quickly become effortless while you’re either playing platforms or fighting. You stop thinking about pressing buttons or whatever, and instead Cal feels like a natural extension of your own body. And to be clear: the first game played really well. But survivor just feels better as every part of the game seems designed to be fun and satisfying to play.
Whenever people play the game my city talk about it Food: Survivor, it usually evolves into people just gushing about the latest sequence they’ve experienced or just trying to describe how great combat or platforming felt during their last play session. Often people don’t even say full sentences, but instead say “Ahhh man… so good” or “Uhhh it’s sooo awesome” or make other noises that aren’t words but convey how much they’re enjoying it.
I’ve heard some complaints about how animations look in-game and I understand that they look choppy at times, but that’s only because Respawn clearly prioritized the input and feel of how it looks. So yes, watching someone play as Cal while jumping around platforms could see weird but feels heavenly to play. I’m not sure about others, but I rarely fast travel in this game because it’s so much fun moving around the planets visited that fast traveling often feels like I’m missing out on one of the best parts of it Food: Survivor. When just moving and jumping in a game feels this good, you know you’ve got something special.
Food: Survivor is much better than just A war of stars Game
It’s easy to assume that all the hype surrounding this game is just because it is war of starsbut also some non-war of stars Fans in this area are having a lot of fun with the game. Again, when you start delving into why, it comes back to how mechanically satisfying and entertaining Jedit: survivor is to play. You don’t have to know or care about the Clone Wars or Jedi or the Force to enjoy Cal sliding down a cliff, leaping in the air, continuing to dash and then holding on to a distant rope to vault over a group of enemies swing which you disembowel in seconds with your lightsaber. This is just universally cool stuff.
And while I just said, it’s great, not just because it is war of stars Game, it still is a unique one war of stars Game. I’ll have more to say about this in the near future, but something I appreciate survivor is just like war of stars-y this game is real. Crispy alien canteensweird but lovable characters, dangerous bounty hunters, cute droids, excellent music, really charming friends, cool ships and all the perfect sound effects.
That is war of stars at its finest (and weirdest) and an example of how AAA games can be big and still feel like every aspect was designed with care. In other words, they can still be incredible when done right. Other developers pay attention to sequences like everything leading up to and immediately after the moment you assume the Crossguard stance, or the amazing escape sequence on Jedha. Can I have some more, please!
Sure, the game has some performance issues, but even those can’t stop us (and the rest of the internet) from playing and enjoying this latest release possibly greatest war of stars video game. Good luck for everything else that comes out in 2023!
