Hello everyone, I’m Julian Huijbregts, Community Manager at Nixxes. Today we celebrate the launch of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered on PC!
Over the past year, our team has worked closely with our friends at Insomniac Games to bring this original Marvel story and PlayStation hit to PC. To give you more information on support for ultra-wide monitors and multiple screen setups*, I’d like to introduce you to some of our Nixxes team members.
Graphics programmer Hilze Vonck, himself a fan of ultrawidescreen gaming, worked on the technical implementation of ultrawide aspect ratios in the PC version of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered. “For five years I’ve used a 21:9 ultrawide monitor. For me, support for ultrawide resolutions in games is really important. We want to give gamers who invest a lot in their setups the ability to to play the game in the best possible way. It really makes a big difference when you see the game on ultra-wide or triple screen setups. It’s super cool to experience the game that way!”
Lead Software Engineer Coen Frauenfelder explains that one of the reasons for going all out with support for ultrawide monitors was the positive feedback from the gaming community about the 21:9 support in other PC games. “We originally planned for 21:9 support, and after some internal testing we decided to take it a step further and add support for 32:9 and 48:9 screens for high-end setups. three monitors. The game lends itself very well to this. Swinging through the streets of Marvel’s New York on an ultrawide screen feels totally different and more immersive.
The PC version of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered is fully optimized for ultra-wide games. Not only the gameplay, but also the numerous cut scenes are adapted for wide aspect ratios up to 32:9. Coen talks about the challenges Nixxes had to overcome to make this possible:
“Implementing ultra-wide support into general gameplay is relatively easy. The big challenge is to accompany him in cinematics specially designed by artists to be viewed on 16:9 screens. Outside of this view area there is a lot going on that needs to be fixed. Characters can freeze or suddenly disappear, for example. The easiest way would be to place black borders in cut scenes to prevent those areas from being seen on ultrawide displays, but we wanted to give PC gamers the ability to make full use of their screens. Our QA team meticulously went through all the cut scenes in ultra-wide view and listed all the details that needed to be changed by our engineers and artists.
Coen highlights how difficult it was to get it right: “We knew it would take a lot of effort, but our team was passionate and determined to make the most of it. Hilze’s enthusiasm for it led him to work a lot on the technical aspects of implementing ultrawide support.
As a result, the kinematics of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered on PC are fully viewable in aspect ratios up to 32:9. When using even wider aspect ratios, such as with three-monitor setups, the outer edges are blurred during cut scenes. This is necessary to block view areas that might otherwise have visual errors. Besides working on the engine for ultra-wide support, Hilze also worked on this: “It was not an easy feature to implement. It took a while, but I think it looks really great.
Outside of gameplay and cutscenes, Nixxes system engineers have ensured that the user interface and menus support widescreen formats. When using ultra-wide monitors, you can change the position of the HUD to different positions.
We know not all of you have ultrawide displays or multiple monitor setups. On traditional 16:9 screens, the PC version of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered also offers many improvements. The game features ray-traced enhanced reflections**, supports NVIDIA DLSS and other upscaling technologies, and offers a full suite of customizable render settings.
Everyone at Nixxes has been incredibly excited to work on this project with our friends at Insomniac. We’d love to hear about your experiences playing the Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered on PC. Contact us on Twitter and follow us to stay up to date!
