After an unexpected closure of the beta servers of Multiversus, last year, Warner Bros. Games finally released the game. This will be available starting May 28. However, we were invited – along with other media outlets – to a short test period, in which we were able to test the different modes and characters that will be available from the launch of the ‘crossover’ that pits the different characters of the intellectual properties of Warner Bros. So in our review of Multiversus We will know if it was worth a year of waiting for this game.
Important changes from the beta
We would be lying if we told you that no one expects the return of Multiversus. However, despite the jubilation of some, Multiversus returns with important changes to its gameplay. The first of these, and perhaps the most talked about among the game’s competitive community, is the pacing of combat. In the version of Multiversus that we had the opportunity to play for the preparation of this review, we were able to verify that the game is slower. This totally changes the pace, since now there is a more strategic approach and reading and reacting to the opponent’s movements is the key to victory.
Additionally, the new mechanics give the player more tools and extra strategy elements. Running attacks, some of them with armor or invulnerability, are a great option in 2 vs. 2 confrontations. The parry of Multiversus It provides a great reward for very little risk. Lastly, Gems are equippable items that grant characters special abilities and stat modifiers.
What types of gems are there in Multiversus
?
- Character Gems: These gems—as their name suggests—are tied to specific characters and grant unique abilities that complement their playstyles. Even these gems can be used on other characters making each play style unique.
- Generic Gems: These gems are not tied to any particular character and offer general benefits. For example, some of these gems can increase attack damage, improve defense, or reduce skill recharge time.
In Multiversus, gems can be obtained in three ways. The first of these is completing challenges in single-player mode, another of the new features of this relaunch. Leveling up the Battle Pass and claiming its rewards. Lastly, players who don’t have the time —but of course the money does— can purchase the gems with Gleamium, the game’s premium currency.
Gems offer endless strategic possibilities. You can equip gems that complement your character’s natural playstyle, or you can experiment with different combinations to create strategies or counter the playstyle of an opponent’s character. For example, with Jason, if we face a character who relies on ranged attacks, we can equip gems that increase defense against projectiles. This is when it can be annoying—for some players—to use real money to get these types of benefits.
¿Multiversus Is it a “Pay to Win” game?
I want to make it clear that it is not difficult to obtain gems for free – if the time invested can be called that way – in Multiversus. However, if there is a competitive community for the game, the fact of being able to obtain everything with money will create an “advantage”—at least initially—for those who have the purchasing power. We can’t predict the future and say this will have a major or minimal impact for the scene. However, in the past Capcom introduced a “similar” gem system in Street Fighter X Tekken
New game modes
Player First Games has also introduced new ways to play Multiversus. This thanks to the adventure cracks, which consist of a series of challenges and battles against enemies controlled by AI. These battles will provide us with rewards that will help us obtain characters, costumes or gems. Additionally, in the final version of Multiversus Players will be able to complete “events.” These consist of rotating challenges that offer unique rewards to players who complete them.
It’s not all about fighting in the adventure rifts. Since, in some challenges we will have to complete tasks such as exploding balloons with a weapon or destroying objectives by platforming in a scenario for a limited time.
Outstanding online game quality
We know that we were able to test the game with a limited group of people. So our experience, both good and bad, will not be the same as what the players of Multiversus when the game comes out on May 28. However, we must highlight that —despite the server connection problems we had— the 1 Vs. 1 or 2 Vs. 2 online games once started never had connection problems and the quality of the games was in outstanding end. Likewise, we remind you that our experience when controlled may differ from what we experience at launch.
In a year Multiversus It has had an evolution that has led it to have a friendlier experience with casual players with strong monetization that is not reflected in the quantity and quality of items for purchase. Some of the changes have served to nourish the meta and create its own personality a little further away from that of the big N game. However, there are elements that can be purchased with real or in-game money that directly affect performance in a game. fight. But as in any game as a service, in the end it will depend on the community that is formed and the care and attention that the game has, which we hope will not be the same as other recent Warner Bros. Games titles. We encourage you to try the game, since without being the competitive response that some expect, it has the potential and personality to shine with its own light.
