Now that we’re all immersed in Fallout nuclear apocalypse fever, the result of an incredible Season 1 on Prime Video, many players are discovering or returning to video games. I have told you everything you need to know about it in recent weeks: a general framework of its universe before watching the series and what game to choose to start in the saga.
In August 2023 I reviewed the history of Fallout 76, from its controversial launch, through all the improvements and post-launch content, to the themed season system that you can find today. The most recent content is called America’s Playgroundwhich is part of the chapter of Atlantic City.
Nuclear Winter, the late Fallout 76 Battle Royale
If you have reached Fallout 76 After watching the Prime Video series, or you plan to do so or did so starting in September 2021, you probably don’t know that the game had a very fun battle royale in which you could launch nuclear bombs during the games.
I’m sorry to tell you that you have no idea what a gem you’ve been missing. I don’t blame you, mind you, but certainly many of you (like me) would be capable of begging Bethesda to bring Nuclear Winter back to Fallout 76
Nuclear Winter mode was first announced in the E3 2019 (4 years) and was Bethesda’s response to the battle royale fever for Fortnite, Warzone, PUBG y Apex Legends. Bethesda promised it would be a “completely new way to play Fallout 76” and it really was. His official description read as follows:
Nuclear bombs have set the world on fire and the battle to claim the position of supervisor of Vault 51 has begun. Will you be the last one standing or will the ring of fire consume you? Rank up, unlock exclusive perks, and build your CAMP to weather the storm in true Fallout style. Search for weapons, supplies, and nukes to take on other players and creatures, and earn rare cosmetic rewards.
A few days later, Nuclear Winter is implemented in early beta with open access for all owners of Fallout 76. It received updates with improvements and fixes over the following months and was finally integrated permanently in 2020 with a free update. It had a good reception in general terms, but it fell far short of being able to compete with the rest of the battle royales available at that time.
The way of playing was no different from any other battle royale: 52 players fell on a map that was closing in a large circle, in this case by a large ring of fire that consumed everything in its path. Although it was far from being a mode without meaning or coherence with the Fallout universe. He had his own comic strip!
He Refugio 52 was looking for a new supervisor and the system had the idea of creating a competition to select the last one standing during these Battle Royale confrontations. In addition, staying in the lobby served to bring players together in a single game and to discover more about the history of the main refuge. It didn’t have a very deep and complex plot, but the experiment is not too far from the other Vault-Tec savagery.
One of the most beloved features of Nuclear Winter in Fallout 76 was the ability to launch nuclear bombs during games to kill players and deny areas as the ring of fire closed. Obviously it was not an easy action to perform and usually required the help of the rest of the teammates, but achieving it was usually a great achievement. So now you know that Warzone It was not the first battle royale to have the nukes, although many players were determined to repeat it back in 2022.
The majority of players Fallout 76 Nuclear Winter is fondly remembered, even by those who didn’t get the most out of the gameplay. Personally, I have a friend who raised a character to Level 150-200 just by playing Battle Royale. So no veteran will be surprised that this idea seems sweet to new Fallout players. Unfortunately, they will never be able to prove it.
Bethesda announced in 2021 that it was permanently retiring Nuclear Winter due to a shortage of players and the inability to maintain the mode with quality content. The anger of the community was monumental, as I have told you, even though Bethesda rewarded the players and refunded all of the coins invested.
The reasons for removing it ended up being a half-truth, because later worlds (private servers) arrived for Fallout 1st subscribers. That is to say: they removed a free mode to add payment options. In any case, this is a very fun game mode that new players will never be able to try. Now that many players are giving another chance to Fallout 76it wouldn’t be a bad time for Bethesda to give it back to us… although it seems like an almost impossible wish.
