Final Fantasy XIV Online has so much to offer in terms of customization and playable content! Learn about the eight starting classes and their three starting locations, which you can consider when creating your very own Warrior of Light.
Create your own Warrior of Light
Creating your character is the first step in your new adventure! Choose your new “you” with confidence because all race and gender options are equal. And don’t fret too much about the decisions at the beginning, because they can all be changed later!
During character creation, you select a starting class that you can transform into iconic jobs from the Final Fantasy series. There are eight starting classes to choose from and many more to improve and master as you progress. Not just combat-oriented classes and jobs, but also classes related to crafting and gathering.
Don’t worry if you want to try more than one, because you can play all available classes and professions with a single character. All you have to do is change your main hand weapon or tool and voila!
Choose your role
There are three roles that the different combat-oriented classes and jobs fall under: Tanks, Healers and DPS (of which there are different types).
tank – A tank has a lot of HP and is trained in defense. He serves as a protective shield for the group. Skilled at attracting an enemy’s attention and bearing the brunt of enemy attacks.
healer – Healers use restorative arts to heal wounded comrades. They can also help mitigate damage, remove harmful effects, and even bring fallen allies back to life.
DPS Types
- Melee DPS are attackers at close range. Focuses on combos and careful positioning to inflict the most damage possible.
Ranged physical DPS Attack enemies from a distance. They are characterized by the fact that they cause lasting damage and also support companions.
Magical ranged DPS Attack enemies with a variety of arcane arts. Movement is limited by casting time, but they are notable for their ability to deal high damage.
Starting locations
Your character’s starting class determines not only your initial playstyle, but also where you begin your journey. in one of three beautiful city states:
- Gridania – In the eastern reaches of the Aldenard landmass, home to vast, dense forests and flowing rivers, lies the forest nation of Gridania. The cityscape is a mosaic of labyrinthine waterways and large wooden structures, built so gracefully that they seem part of the surrounding area.
- Limsa Lominsa – On the southern coast of Vylbrand Island, in the shadow of ancient cliffs eroded by the relentless onslaught of the Rhotano Sea, lies the maritime city-state of Limsa Lominsa. Said to have been blessed by the goddess of navigation, Llymlaen, the city stretches across countless small islands, all connected by sturdy bridges made of iron and wood, earning it the name “Seafarer’s Veil” because traveling bards witnessed the City rides were beauty from a distance.
- Ul’dah – The bustling trading center of Ul’dah lies amid the desolate desert landscape of southern Aldenard. The city is strategically organized around the domed citadel at its center. Its towering fortifications and protective outer walls are visible to Malms in all directions and serve as a strong deterrent to would-be besiegers.
Here’s where the eight starting classes start and how they evolve into legendary Final Fantasy jobs:
role | Starting class | Evolved job | Starting location |
tank | gladiator | paladin | Ul’dah |
tank | Marauders | warrior | Limsa Lominsa |
healer | Magician | White magician | Gridania |
Healer/DPS | Arcanist | Scholar (Healer) or Summoner (DPS) | Limsa Lominsa |
DPS | Pugilist | monk | Ul’dah |
DPS | Lancer | dragoon | Gridania |
DPS | Archer | bard | Gridania |
DPS | Thaumaturge | Black magician | Ul’dah |
Of course, your adventures will extend far beyond these initial city-states and early class options. During your time in Eorzea, you’ll be able to explore a variety of new locations and learn a variety of combat-oriented professions, as well as more basic crafting and gathering courses.
