The indie sequel Darkest Dungeon 2, released last year, is receiving fresh content as the new Kingdoms mode was announced as part of an event.
Darkest Dungeon 2 has been available in early access since 2021, and the full version of the turn-based roguelike was finally released last year in 2023. Now replenishment in the form of new content is on the way, as the new Kingdoms mode has now been announced for the current year 2024 as part of The Triple-i Initiative event.
The gameplay should therefore change noticeably in Kingdoms mode. The focus here is on defending a kingdom and fighting off invasions that try to conquer it. You can expect this topic as part of a free update towards the end of 2024. The style should then represent a mix of the original Darkest Dungeon and the sequel.
After a lot had changed in the sequel compared to the original game, the Kingdoms mode will bring back some features that fans of the first part missed. Among other things, you can look forward to roster management again. Creative director Chris Bourassa and his team want to present more concrete details and share them with fans before the release.
But one thing is already certain: you will be able to upgrade your heroes with the resources you have collected. This will also be necessary to take on returning adversaries like Coven Beastmen and Crimson Courtiers.
It is currently unclear whether the Kingdoms mode will also be available there when the console versions launch; this is currently still pending.
