Mordenkainen, the master wizard of the Dungeons & Dragons multiverse, arrives Magic the Gathering. Polygon can make its new map exclusively for the Adventure in the forgotten realms Set that transforms D&D co-creator Gary Gygax’s own player character into a planeswalker.
Mordenkainen was developed for the original Greyhawk campaign back in the early 1970s. Originally, it was a way for Gygax to come out from behind the Dungeon Master’s screen and actually play the game. He has since been one of the longest running characters in the D&D Multiverse. He’s a bit of a traveler and makes the rounds in the Forgotten Realms (D & D’s current main location) as well as in Strahd von Zarovich’s Barovia and Krynn, the setting for the Dragonlance novels.
So it’s no wonder that Mordenkainen is portrayed here as a planeswalker. Powerful wizards from a vast and Byzantine multiverse, Planeswalkers can be played alongside others magic
Once it comes into play, players can use it to draw more cards. After a while, they can cast the Loyal Dog (one of his signature spells), which has a strength and toughness equal to the number of cards in the player’s hand. Eventually, players can use this card to trade their hand for the rest of their library – essentially any other card they put into play.
Mordenkainen is still alive and well in the larger D&D multiverse. Next to his cameo-in Curse of Strahd, he also wrote his own book for the 5th edition. Mordenkainen’s Tome of Enemies was published in 2018. Magic: The Gathering Adventures in the Forgotten Realms comes for Magic: The Assembly Arena on July 8th. Physical cards arrive on July 23rd.
